Lynda Carter, the original on-screen Wonder Woman, made a surprise appearance at the Wonder Woman 1984 FanDome panel, and was showered with praise by the cast and director Patty Jenkins. Carter played the titular character on the Wonder Woman TV series in the 1970s, cementing the character as one of the staple superheroes in popular culture. While the show might have aged, understandably, over the past 40 years, it's still a classic TV staple, and Carter shines in the role.
Of course, these days, Gal Gadot plays Wonder Woman, debuting in the role in 2016's Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice before starring her own solo film, Wonder Woman, in 2017. She then reprised the role in Justice League and will appear in Wonder Woman 1984 when it finally releases October 2nd. The Israeli former beauty queen turned actress appeared at the DC FanDome panel today along with her castmates Pedro Pascal, Kristen Wiig, Chris Pine and Jenkins. Not only was a brand new Wonder Woman 1984 trailer revealed, giving a full look at Wiig's Cheetah unveiled, but a special guest made an appearance.
Carter dropped in to the surprise of the cast and crew during the DC FanDome panel for Wonder Woman 1984 and immediately drew praise from them. Jenkins introduced Carter by saying that she is the reason they're all there. Wiig was visibly excited, saying she watched Carter's Wonder Woman as a child, and would dress up as her for Halloween, adding that she was very excited to meet her, and wished she could hug her. Carter then went on to speak about the impact the current Wonder Woman movies have had on her.
I'm beyond excited. I have been a fan from day one of Patty's, when she was first attached to these films. You know, when my daughter saw Gal as Wonder Woman, she said "mom, I finally get it. I finally understand why everyone idolizes you. I finally get what Wonder Woman means to everyone." And that's MY daughter, my own flesh and blood. So thank you, Gal, thank you, Patty.
Jenkins responded by saying that she's simply taking "the torch and pass it forward" for Wonder Woman, not reinventing the character. She also said that Carter's story was a huge compliment to know that Carter's daughter acknowledges the impact Gadot's version of Wonder Woman has had on the world. Gadot then added that Carter is a "true-life Wonder Woman" and that she is "grateful to have" Carter's "guidance."
Carter's appearance was not only a surprise, but ended up being a little emotional too. Carter was close to tears when she spoke about the impact that the movies had on her daughter, and it was clear that she, Jenkins and Gadot share a lot of affection for each other. It was undoubtedly one of the highlights from the panel and reinforced the iconic nature of the character, and is a reminder that Wonder Woman 1984 is just the latest appearance of the character on screen.
