At a DC FanDome panel for Justice League Snyder Cut, director Zack Snyder revealed his all-time favorite superhero is Doctor Manhattan.
During a DC FanDome panel, director Zack Snyder revealed his favorite superhero of all time, and the answer is only mildly surprising. Snyder has been a crucial part of bringing beloved comic characters to the big screen over the last decade-plus, specifically when it comes to DC’s superheroes. After directing 300 in 2006, Snyder went onto direct a live-action adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons comic book, Watchmen. The director has also been a significant player in the DCEU, kicking of Warner Bros. universe with Man of Steel in 2013, and following that up with Batman v Superman.
Justice League Snyder Cut has lingered in the cultural zeitgeist for years, as the director and fans have heavily campaigned for his version to see the light of day. Incredibly, the director will get his wish in the form of a four-part TV show on HBO Max. A visually stunning trailer of Snyder’s Justice League came out at DC FanDome, showcasing the differences in color scheme, tone, and also elements like Superman’s black suit. But amidst the buzz surrounding the Justice League, Snyder provided an interesting answer regarding his all-time favorite superhero.
On Zack Snyder’s Justice League DC FanDome panel, the director received a question, read out by Ben Affleck, which asked Snyder, “Who is your favorite superhero of all time?” After jokingly acknowledging Affleck’s hints at choosing Batman, Snyder said his favorite superhero stays in the “DC world” before saying, “It’s gotta be Doctor Manhattan from Watchmen, I think.” Adding, “for me, he’s like this super cool, quantum superhero” while also acknowledging Manhattan having “time, space, reality” at his “fingertips.”
An easy answer would have been to pick someone like Batman, as Affleck humorously suggested. However, to Snyder’s credit, he went with a project from his past, an apparent personal favorite. Doctor Manhattan is a very unique and powerful superhero, with an ability to be aware of the past, present, and future simultaneously. Also, considering the success of the Watchmen HBO series, which Doctor Manhattan ultimately plays a big part in, it’s an answer that likely connects with fans in 2020.
While things end tragically for Doctor Manhattan in the HBO series, the character lives on in the pages of DC Comics. Zack Snyder can follow Doctor Manhattan's further adventures in the comics or maybe bring the character back to the big screen in future projects.
