In a DC FanDome roundtable, Zack Snyder expresses his excitement at The Batman trailer, saying the movie was headed in the "right direction."
The Robert Pattinson-centered The Batman movie has officially received the Zack Snyder seal of approval. Though Snyder is not involved in The Batman production and hasn’t worked with the Batman character since Justice League, the filmmaker still has a level of investment in the character.
Thanks to the online fan event DC FanDome, The Batman has been all over entertainment news headlines for the past few days. During a panel discussing the movie, DC revealed the first footage from the Matt Reeves movie in an exciting trailer. While there were plenty of great revelations about this new Batman from his comics-accurate costume to his fantastic eye makeup, the most notable information from DC FanDome is that this Batman exists in an entirely separate universe from the DCEU characters. In other words, the DC films from Snyder will have no impact on this Batman’s story.
As part of DC FanDome this past weekend, Snyder participated in a roundtable discussion with members of the YouTube channel Reel in Motion, during which he gave his opinion on The Batman. Snyder stated that the trailer made him excited for the movie not just as a DC filmmaker, but as a fan. “I think it’s the right direction,” Snyder said. Most of Snyder’s praise, as well as the praise of the panel facilitators, focused on the gritty aesthetics of the trailer and the dark tone the movie seems to be taking.
Since he has no direct involvement in The Batman project, Snyder didn’t have much more to say about the trailer or the movie as a whole. Most of Snyder’s attention has been focused on his highly anticipated Justice League project, a four hour TV mini-series that will reinsert his cut footage to create the infamous “Snyder Cut." Through extensive online discourse, Snyder has turned into one of the most respected and viciously defended creators in the DC fan community.
Given Snyder’s popularity, an endorsement from the filmmaker could mean fantastic things for The Batman. Knowing that their favorite director is a fan of a movie could reassure fans who are otherwise uncertain about this new Batman they’ve never seen before. In an ideal situation, Matt Reeves’ The Batman will be a strong enough film to stand on its own merits, but a thumbs up from Snyder certainly doesn’t hurt.
