In a new parody from late night talk show host Stephen Colbert, the Avengers become American political figures in Endgame's climactic moment.
The Avengers of American politics assemble in this Avengers: Endgame parody video from Stephen Colbert. Considering how this year has seen the moviegoing industry come to a standstill, it's a little strange to believe the biggest movie of all time debuted just last year. Endgame served as the culmination of the MCU's Infinity Saga, with the remaining Avengers coming together to fix what was broken at the end of 2018's Avengers: Infinity War. Endgame is unlike any other MCU film that came before, and not just because it runs for three hours. It features numerous callbacks to previous films, several cheer-worthy moments, and two devastating deaths.
One of Endgame's biggest moments comes when, as Captain America (Chris Evans) prepares to take on Thanos (Josh Brolin) all by himself, the Avengers get a major assist in the form of the heroes who Thanos killed in Infinity War. In a truly triumphant moment, all of the missing heroes emerge from portals created by Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and unite against Thanos and his army. It's a moment that has been parodied and mimicked several times since Endgame was released, and now talk show host Colbert has gotten in on the action.
As the 2020 presidential election heats up, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert shared a video reimagining Endgame's portals moment with figures from the American government. Democratic candidate Joe Biden becomes Captain America, while his VP pick Kamala Harris can be glimpsed as Captain Marvel (Brie Larson). At the end of the video is President Donald Trump, who takes on the Thanos role. You can see the video down below.
Interestingly enough, this is not the first time Trump has been positioned as Thanos. In fact, his campaign did so just last December, making the questionable choice of showing Trump as Thanos as he attempted to perform his infamous Snap. At the time, Thanos' creator Jim Starlin took issue with the campaign using his character, but the clip in question remains up on social media today.
It's a testament to the epic scale of Endgame's portals moment that it's become such an easily recognizable piece of pop culture and keeps getting parodied. With much of the MCU on hold right now due to the coronavirus pandemic, fans have to turn to the previous films in order to make the wait more tolerable. There was a wave of Endgame nostalgia earlier this year when the one-year anniversary arrived, and until fans finally get the next MCU movie (Black Widow, currently scheduled for November), they might just have to rewatch the Avengers taking on Thanos once again.
