2019's Captain Marvel could've featured a sneaky MODOK Easter egg, as shown in this new piece of concept art from Rodney Fuentebella.
Captain Marvel could have contained a sneaky MODOK Easter egg. The MCU arrival of Carol Danvers, or Captain Marvel, came on the heels of much anticipation. Despite initial plans to introduce Captain Marvel at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron, Marvel held off on her grand entrance until Phase 3. The post-credits scene for Avengers: Infinity War teased her arrival when Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) reached out to her via 90s pager. Then, finally, Carol received her own movie in the March of last year, which also served as her first MCU appearance.
Captain Marvel starred Brie Larson as Air Force pilot-turned-Kree Starforce member Carol. Much of the film focused on Carol's efforts to remember her past on Earth, as well as her gradual mastery of her Tesseract-given powers. Audiences responded positively to the film, leading to Captain Marvel grossing over $1.1 billion worldwide. Carol later returned in Avengers: Endgame, and she's expected to play a major role in the MCU's future. Captain Marvel 2 is currently scheduled to arrive in July 2022 and recently scored Candyman's Nia DaCosta as director.
Marvel concept artist Rodney Fuentebella recently shared a piece he designed for Captain Marvel online. In it, Carol squares off against a Kree in what looks like an underground fight club. Much of the surrounding audience appears to be Kree as well, but look closely at the front row, and you may spot a familiar face from Marvel Comics. Was MODOK really going to appear in the background of Captain Marvel?
Odds are, no. Concept art doesn't actually decide what will be in the film, it just provides examples of what sets and costumes could look like. It's more likely that Fuentebella decided to have some fun with his background and put MODOK in as a fun Easter egg. Fans have long wanted to see MODOK, one of the most iconic Marvel villains, join the MCU, but so far he's remained out of it. Agents of SHIELD had plans for MODOK, but Marvel called them off. This makes one wonder if Marvel Studios finally has plans to introduce MODOK in their live-action world, though it remains to be seen where he would appear.
It's worth mentioning that Captain Marvel 2 doesn't have a villain yet, though depending on when the film is set, it might choose to continue Carol's battle with the Kree. Captain Marvel 2 is still very much in the early stages, so it'll be a while before more concrete details are revealed. Nevertheless, fans are very excited to see what's next for Carol, and the addition of DaCosta is especially thrilling because of the positive buzz surrounding Candyman. Still, perhaps the sequel will do what Captain Marvel did not and find a way to incorporate MODOK. Only time will tell.
