Mechelle Colin Farrell's Penguin Appearance In The Batman Trailer Confirmed

The Batman makeup artist confirms that Colin Farrell's Penguin look really was featured in trailer that premiered during DC FanDome.

The Batman makeup artist confirms Colin Farrell's Penguin appearance in the trailer. During DC FanDome this past weekend, audiences were treated to the first The Batman trailer, which received widespread praise. Even though director Matt Reeves has shot only 25% of the film, the preview did a very good job of immediately establishing The Batman's tone and illustrating how this iteration differs from previous Batman movies. Many viewers drew comparisons to David Fincher films like Se7en and are excited to see the finished product.

A key component of the trailer was setting up Paul Dano's Riddler as The Batman's primary antagonist, but most are likely aware Riddler is not the only villain in the movie. Colin Farrell is portraying the Penguin, who still is not a mob boss at the time the film picks up. As audiences dissected the trailer following its debut, some became convinced it had revealed Farrell's new look as the Penguin, and now that has finally been confirmed.

On Instagram, Mike Marino of Prosthetic Renaissance shared a slideshow of The Batman trailer screenshots of Farrell. In his caption, he definitively ends any debate over whether or not the actor was in the trailer. That was, in fact, Farrell's Penguin.

The Batman team did an amazing job on Farrell's prosthetics, as the actor is unrecognizable in the footage. Some felt Farrell looked more like actor Richard Kind than himself. This is hardly the first time someone's usual appearance has been transformed via makeup, but that doesn't make the work Marino and his team did any less impressive. It goes a long way in making Farrell's Penguin resemble his comics counterpart, and it should be fun to see his full performance when The Batman comes out next year. The Penguin hasn't been in a live-action Batman movie since Batman Returns, so hopefully Reeves, Farrell, and the rest of the creative team came up with a fresh take that'll connect with modern audiences while also honoring the character's rich history.

Nailing the look of the Penguin is an integral part to the character's portrayal, so it's a great sign Reeves and company did not take Oswald Cobblepot's design lightly. Interestingly, Reeves has implied Oswald is not a fan of the insulting "Penguin" nickname, which could serve as the foundation for his arc in The Batman. The film is meant to be an origin story for many villains, and since Cobblepot is not a big kingpin when the film starts, perhaps he will become one by The Batman's end and embrace his Penguin persona. If Farrell's turn is well-received, people probably wouldn't mind seeing him return for sequels.
